Did tea reduce mortality rates in the British Empire

The humble cuppa has a long and interesting history - and an article from BBC Future looks at whether the widespread introduction of tea helped to reduce mortality rates on the British population.

A research paper from an economist in America suggests that the popularisation of tea in the late 18th century could have saved many lives.

The research suggests that much of the benefit could actually have been due to the practice of boiling water, as opposed to the many antioxidants present in tea. Figures suggest that the mortality rate dropped notably over a 70 year period around this time, with particularly notable changes in parishes that had poor water quality.
