Cuppa a day cuts heart disease risk

11th March 2016
An article in the Daily Mail has highlighted a recent study of 6,200 people by the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, America. The study suggests that drinking just one cup of tea per day could lower one’s risk of heart attack or stroke.

The findings of the study concluded that those who drank tea daily had a “35% lower chance of a cardiac attack, heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death”. Daily tea drinkers apparently had fewer calcium deposits in their coronary arteries, which helps prevents heart problems from occurring.

The study didn’t conduct any research into why tea may provide these health benefits, but previous research has suggested that the flavonoids found within tea may be the reason.

Other studies in recent years, including ones on much larger population sets, have reached similar conclusions – with the European Journal of Epidemiology concluding that “increased tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, cardiac disease, stroke, cerebral infection, and intracerebral haemorrhage, as well as total mortality.”
